NATIONAL COMMITTEES SERVICE
Committee on Committees (CONC)
2016-2018 and 2018-2021; Elected Chair 2018-2020.
Chair: Lead dynamic committee to develop recommendations for ~450 committee appointments annually. Improved transparency of committee appointment process by developing annual presentations for all Council-related committees. Presentations on Engaging With Committees at New Councilor Orientation sessions. Championed improved collaboration and communication between committees, including “speed networking for committees” sessions. Provided training as part of New Committee Chair training at ACS Leadership Institute.
Member: Served as CONC Liaison to CEPA and M&E and wrote one 5-year committee review. Participated in Strategic Planning session, completed items as Champion, and served as Chair of new Committee System and Structure Subcommittee.
Board Planning Committee
2011-2013, 2015, Consultant 2016-2017
Lead Working Group on Communications to develop a communications plan for the annual ACS Strategic Plan and a member handbook to orient new committee members on the process. My first term was based on role as vice-chair of CPC; participation since then was by request of Chair of Planning Committee.
Council Policy Committee (CPC)
2010-2012 and 2013-2015; Elected Vice-chair 2011-2013
Vice-Chair: Drove adoption of reimbursement policy for non-Councilor committee members that had been dangling for 7 years.
Drove adoption of CPC policies, including recorded clicker votes and taking surveys during Council meetings.
Long Range Planning Subcommittee Chair: Led Strategy Cafes at National meetings for Younger Chemists and Undergraduate Students which engaged participants in dialog on the ACS Strategic Plan and the 4 key goals. Organized Strategy Cafes at the January Leadership Institute. Improved New Councilor Orientation to on-board new Councilors and Alternate Councilors and created New Councilor Webinar. Led development of white paper on issues for Council Representation and Size; this is now a current focus for CPC.
Committee on Science (COMSCI)
2006-2009; Chair 2007-2009
Chair: Transformed committee by focusing efforts on delivering technical assessments on alternate energy sources. Previously, committee responded annually to ACS President programming requests with minimal results; interesting discussions took place but the perception was that the committee didn’t deliver against its potential. A culture change was needed to achieve this transformation. To achieve the transformation, I engaged the Chair of the Board and CONC liaison in supporting change in expectations.
Contributed to creation and shaping of Multidisciplinary Program Planning Group (MPPG) which selects the technical theme for each national meeting.
Joint Subcommittee on Diversity
2006
I led the creation of the Joint Subcommittee on Diversity which was a subcommittee of WCC, YCC, CMA, CWD, and CTA and I served as first chair. The JSD created unified programs that addressed diversity in all forms and was the first collaborative efforts by these committees. Wrote ACS Diversity Policy Statement which was adopted by Board. Several years later, the JSD was elevated from a joint subcommittee to the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board for the Board of Directors.
Women Chemists Committee (WCC)
1999-2005; Chair 2003-2005
Chair: Strategic planning session emphasized attracting, developing and promoting women in chemistry. As a result of the objectives that the team wanted to achieve, two new subcommittees were created: Local/Regional WCC and Advocacy. During my time as chair there was increased visibility of national awards received by women.
The committee published and launched the book “Successful Women in Chemistry” by Hinkle and Kocsis. WCC Luncheons recognized younger women chemists and featured a highly successful keynote speaker. I led Women in Industry Breakfasts which engaged participants in discussion related to career success. The Local Section Networking Lunch provided a forum for LS leaders to exchange ideas for their WCC programs.
Younger Chemists Committee (YCC)
1994-1998; Chair 1997-1998
Chair: I led the strategic planning session and developed mission and vision statements along with strategic goals. Three elements of the mission statement “involve, integrate, relevant” persisted in the mission statement for multiple years). The Younger Chemists Network was created out of this strategy session. I created a Chair’s Manual to accelerate development of future committee chairs.
Member: I organized multiple symposia on diverse topics including Communication Styles (participants remember their styles 15 years later), Quality, Ethics, and Careers in Industry. As chair of Local and Regional subcommittee, developed the Local Section YCC program starter kit that provided information and starter grants to new local sections of the YCC (LSYCC).

Served on Task Force on Governance Design which resulted in significant revision of ACS governing documents and charged CPC and ConC with reviewing alternate models for Council and Committee structures.
Sustainability Stakeholder Steering Group (S3G)
~2008-2010; 6 months as co-chair. Chair of Sustainability Engagement Event, March 2010
Membership of the group was comprised of representatives from several ACS national committees who collaborated to develop activities and programs related to sustainability.
I chaired the Sustainability Engagement Event at the March 2010 National ACS meeting with ~100 participants focused on engaging members in 10 potential sustainability projects. Several of these were rolled into existing committee or division programs.
PROGRESS Steering Team
2002-2007
This group worked on eight elements as a foundation for accelerating the advancement of women in chemistry. I led the “Thriving in the Workplace” initiative designed to communicate the challenges faced by early-and mid-career women and share best practices. Held Roadshows at eight regional meetings in 2003-2005, which included presentations and a networking reception. I later learned that this provided the inspiration for one woman to refocus her career along a new path. Three articles were published on best practices for creating a successful environment for women in chemistry, including the importance of networking and mentoring. The Roadshows were transferred to the ACS WCC to continue.
